By Erin Voegele | April 17, 2014

The U.S. EPA has published renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for March, reporting that nearly 1.37 billion RINs were generated during the month across all five biofuel categories. Both D3 cellulosic biofuel and D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated during the month.

According to the EPA, 6,624 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in March, bringing the total for the first three months of the year to 72,111 RINs. Most of those RINs, 44,168, were generated for renewable gasoline, with the remaining 27,943 generated for ethanol. To date, all D3 cellulosic RINs were generated by domestic producers.

EPA data indicates 472 D7cellulosic diesel RINs were generated during the month, representing the first D7 RINs generated so far this year. According to the EPA, the D7 RINs were generated by an importer.

Nearly 10.28 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in March, up from 6.36 million in February and 8.7 million in January. Nearly 25.3 million D5 RINs were generated during the first three months of the year. Most, 11.55 million were generated for ethanol. An additional 7.06 million D5 RINs have been generated for biogas, along with 4.19 million for naptha. Approximately 2.54 million D5 RINs have also been generated for non-ester renewable diesel so far this year. EPA data indicates 19.99 million D5 RINs were generated by domestic producers during the first three months of year, along with 5.35 million generated by importers.

Nearly 1.16 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in March, bringing the total for the first three months of the year to more than 3.38 billion. The vast majority, 3.32 billion, were generated for ethanol. An addition 168,947 D6 RINs were generated for biodiesel, along with 67.89 million for non-ester renewable diesel. Nearly 3.32 billion D6 RINs were generated by domestic producers. Approximately 168,947 and 67.89 million were generated by importers and foreign producers, respectively.

Nearly 208.38 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in March, up from 162.55 million in February and 137.02 million in January. During the first three months of the year, more than 507.83 million D4 RINs were generated, including 353.26 for biodiesel and 154.69 million for non-ester renewable diesel. More than 386.48 million were generated by domestic producers, with 37.39 million and 84.08 million respectively generated by importers and foreign producers.

The EPA currently estimated that 150.27 2014 RINs are locked and available, along with 3.75 billion unlocked and available. Approximately 20.44 million 2014 RINs have been retired so far this year.
