Honeywell jet fuel powers World Cup flights

GOL Airlines, the official airline of the Brazil soccer team, is fueling up with Honeywell Green Jet Fuel to carry the team to Brazilian cities hosting 2014 FIFA World Cup matches.

The fuel, made from inedible corn oil and used cooking oil, is being blended up to 50 percent with petroleum-based jet fuel to power 200 commercial GOL Airline flights. For the flights, UOP supplied nearly 92,000 liters (24,304 gallons) of fuel, which requires no changes to aircraft technology, meets all critical specifications for flight, and can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 to 85 percent compared with petroleum-based fuels, according to Honeywell.

The UOP process technology deployed to manufacture the fuel was originally developed in 2007 under a contract from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to produce renewable JP-8 fuel for the U.S. military. The same technology was used in 2011 to fuel the first biofuel-powered transatlantic flight, a Honeywell-operated Gulfstream G450 that flew from New Jersey to Paris.

Honeywell began expanding into Brazil, the second largest producer of biofuels in the world, in 2011, when it opened an office in Rio de Janerio, and in 2012 powered flights to the Rio+20 United Nations Conference held there.

Honeywell expects to begin commercial production of its renewable jet fuel and green diesel this year at the AltAir Fuels facility near Los Angeles. The 30 MMgy facility was previously a petroleum refinery, and will sell 15 MMgy of jet fuel to United Airlines over a three-year period, with an option to purchase more. The fuel will be used on United flights operating out of LAX.

The World Cup, which is held once every four years, began on June 12 and is scheduled to conclude on July 13.
