Florida PSC approves Gainesville biomass plant

The Florida Public Service Commission has approved the proposed Gainesville, Fla., Renewable Energy Center, a 100-megawatt wood-burning power plant near Tallahassee that is slated for operation in 2013.

Through a 30-year contract with Gainesville Regional Utilities, Boston-based American Renewables will build, own and operate the plant, using about 1 million tons of forest and wood processing residues and clean municipal wood waste per year, according to American Renewables. The feedstock will come from within a 75-mile radius, an area determined by an independent study to have more than adequate fuel supplies for the facility's needs, according to the company.
