Cellulosic biofuel, cellulosic diesel RINs generated in July

By Erin Voegele | September 03, 2013

The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for July, showing that both D3 cellulosic biofuel and D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated for the second consecutive month.

A total of 56,460 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in July, representing 37,639 gallons of fuel. Production was down slightly from the 73,271 D3 RINs for 48,846 gallons of fuel produced in June. The year-to-date total for D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs is 129,731.

The biofuels industry also produced 26,031 gallons of cellulosic diesel and generated 44,253 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs in July, up from June’s production level of 19,251 gallons and 32,728 D7 RINs. A total of 85,313 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs have been generated so far in 2013.

More than 61.85 million D5 advanced biofuels RINs were generated in July, representing 58.5 million gallons of fuel. During the first seven months of the year, more than 305.88 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated, including nearly 8.15 million D5 RINs for biogas. Ethanol accounted for 274.05 D5 RINs, with non-ester renewable diesel accounting for 176.11 million advanced biofuel RINs.

In addition, nearly 1.15 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in July for 1.14 billion gallons of fuel. Nearly 7.51 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated during the first seven months of the year. The majority of those RINs were generated for ethanol, with a minority generated for biodiesel and renewable diesel.

According to the EPA data, 255.45 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were also produced in July, representing 166.36 million gallons of fuel. More than 1.32 billion D4 RINs were generated during the first seven months of the year, the vast majority of which were generated for biodiesel. A portion of D4 RINs were also generated for renewable diesel.

All D3 cellulosic biofuel and D7 cellulosic diesel RINs generated so far in 213 have been generated by domestic producers. Nearly 1.11 D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 106.67 million generated by importers and 114.7 million generated by foreign producers. Only 44.93 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated domestically. Nearly 261.26 million were generated by importers. The vast majority—nearly 7.45 billion—of renewable fuel RINs were generated domestically, with 70.41 million generated by foreign producers.

The EPA estimates that of the more than 9.15 billion total RINs generated so far in 2013, approximately 324.37 million locked and 8.66 billion unlocked RINs are currently available. The remaining 168.92 million have been retired.
