Cellulosic biofuel, diesel RINs generated in October

By Erin Voegele | November 22, 2013

The U.S. EPA has published renewable identification number (RIN) data for October, reporting that both D3 cellulosic biofuel and D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated during the month.

According to the EPA, 44,372 D3 RINs were generated in October for 29,580 gallons of biofuel along with 60,007 D7 RINs for 36,298 gallons of fuel. October was the fourth month during which cellulosic RINs were generated in 2013. D3 and D7 RINs were also generated in June, July and September.

EPA data indicates 294,554 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs have been generated this year on a net basis, along with 269,260 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs. All D3 RINs generated so far this year have been generated for renewable gasoline and all D7 RINs for renewable diesel. To date, all cellulosic RINs have been generated by domestic producers.

Approximately 25.4 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in October, representing nearly 29.81 million gallons of biofuel. During the first 10 months of the year, nearly 512.96 million D5 RINs were generated on a net basis, including 429.833 million for ethanol, 22.2 million for biogas, and 61.18 million for renewable diesel.  A total of 104.04 million D5 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 410.78 million generated by importers.

According to the EPA, nearly 1.18 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in October, bringing the net total for the first 10 months of the year to 10.93 billion. The majority, 10.77 billion RINs, were generated for ethanol, with 25.51 million generated for biodiesel 1.63 million for naptha, and 141.81 million for renewable diesel. More than 10.77 billion D6 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 24.74 million generated by importers and 141.81 million generated by foreign producers.

The data also notes that 250.24 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in October, bringing the net total for the first 10 months of the year to 2.11 billion RINs. The majority, 1.79 billion, were generated for biodiesel, with 321.61 million generated for renewable diesel. Nearly 1.74 billion D4 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 168.6 million generated by importers and 209.22 million generated by foreign producers.

Overall, the EPA estimates that nearly 12.95 billion unlocked and 405.72 million locked RINs are currently available. More than 13.57 billion RINs have been generated so far in 2013.
