By Erin Voegele | January 30, 2014

The U.S. EPA has published renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for December and all of 2013, reporting that the biofuel industry generated nearly 16.62 billion RINs last year.

A total of 69,067 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in December for 46,044 gallons of fuel, bringing the annual total to 442,740 D3 RINs and 281,819 gallons of fuel. All cellulosic biofuel RINs generated in 2013 were generated for renewable gasoline and were generated by domestic producers.

EPA data shows that 59,091 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in December, representing 34,759 gallons of fuel. For all 12 months of 2013. 387,445 D7 RINs were generated on a net basis for 232,808 gallons of fuel. All D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated for drop-in diesel, and all were generated by domestic producers.

Approximately 15.47 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in December for 14.69 million gallons of fuel. More than 550.98 million D5 RINs were generated throughout 2013 on a net basis. Most, 457.2 million D5 RINs were generated for ethanol last year, along with 25.57 million for biogas, 3.47 million for naptha, and approximately 70.03 million for non-ester renewable diesel. More than 121.9 million D5 RINS were generated by domestic producers, with 46.16 million generated by importers. None were generated by foreign producers.

More than 1.24 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in December, bringing the total to more than 13.31 billion for all of 2013. More than 13.08 billion D6 RINs were generated for ethanol last year, with 55.17 million generated for biodiesel 196.36 million for non-ester renewable diesel, and 15,198 for butanol. More than 13.09 billion D6 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 46.16 million generated by importers and 196.36 million generated by foreign producers.

EPA data also shows that 321.19 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINS were generated in December, bringing the 2013 total to nearly 2.72 billion RINs. Nearly 2.29 billion D4 RINs were generated for biodiesel, with 438.71 million generated for non-ester renewable diesel. More than 2.17 billion D4 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 264.71 million generated by importers and 286.88 million generated by foreign producers.

The EPA currently estimates that 454 million locked and 15.87 billion unlocked RINs are available. Additional information on 2013 RIN data is available on the EPA EMTS Data website.
