The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for February, reporting that more than 1.21 billion RINs were generated during the month across all five fuel categories.

EPA data shows 7,072 D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated during the month, bringing 2014 generation to 65,487 RINs to date. During the first two months of the year, 21,319 D3 RINs were generated for cellulosic ethanol production. The remaining 44,168 D3 RINs were generated for renewable diesel. All D3 RINs were generated by domestic producers. No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated during the month.

Nearly 5.94 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in February. As of the close of the month, nearly 14.64 million D5 RINs had been generated since the beginning of the year, including 6.63 million for ethanol, 4.36 million for biogas, 2.68 million for naptha and approximately 972,226 for non-ester renewable diesel. More than 11.98 million D5 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 2.66 million generated by importers.

Nearly 1.05 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in February, bringing the year-to-date total to nearly 2.22 billion RINs. The vast majority, 2.17 billion, were generated for ethanol. Approximately 168,947 D6 RINs were generated for biodiesel, and 53.38 million RINs for renewable diesel. Nearly 21.7 billion D6 RINs were generated by domestic producers, with 168,947 generated by importers and 53.38 million generated by foreign producers.

EPA data also indicates that approximately 156.32 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in February, bringing the 2014 to-date total to 296.28 million. More than 197.75 million were generated for biodiesel, with 95.58 million generated for non-ester renewable diesel. Nearly 226.56 million D4 RINs were generated domestically. An additional 17.75 million and 49.02 million were generated by importers and foreign producers, respectively.

The EPA currently estimates that 2.53 billion RINs have been generated this year. More than 19.41 million have been retired, with 102.84 million locked and available and 2.41 billion unlocked and available.
