Player Design building Maine pellet plant

Player Design Inc., a Maine-based engineering, drying and energy equipment provider, is in the midst of building a pellet manufacturing plant in Sanford, Maine.

PDI President Tyler Player said the project model is unique, as it is being constructed and completely financed by Player Design. “Aside from an Andritz press and a Hamer bagger, we’re providing the whole thing,” he said.

The plant is colocated at Pleasant River Co.’s Maine Pine Mill, and all feedstock will come from area sawmills, as it’s being designed utilize residuals, a market that has struggled as a result of many paper mill closures in Maine over the past several years. “Right now, everyone has these residual problems, so a deal was struck to build this plant to take in that waste,” Player said.

Once the facility has been operating smoothly and hitting performance marks, it will be purchased by F.E. Wood & Sons, which initiated the project, according to Player.

The roughly 35,000-ton-capacity facility should be running by the fourth quarter of this year, he said.
