St. Landry Parish has officially opened its expanded BioCNG Vehicle Fuel Facility at its sanitary landfill, which is now fueling Progressive Waste Solutions Ltd. refuse vehicles collecting residential trash in St. Landry Parish. It is the only one of its kind in the state of Louisiana.
The expansion of the existing fueling facility was initiated by a fuel purchase agreement between St. Landry Solid Waste Commission and Progressive Waste. In 2015, Progressive Waste purchased 10 new compressed natural gas (CNG) powered refuse collection trucks to provide residential collection services in the Parish and decided to use the biogas generated at the St. Landry Parish Landfill versus constructing its own fueling station using an alternative natural gas source.
The garbage being collected by Progressive Waste and disposed of in the landfill generates biogas which is converted into a renewable natural gas that powers the Company&rsquo;s CNG collection vehicles. This is an example of what is commonly referred to as the Circular Economy whereby waste materials are repurposed into other beneficial reuses. The use of biogas or renewable natural gas by Progressive Waste as well as fueling public works trucks and the sheriffs&rsquo; vehicle fleet also reduces carbon emissions in the Parish. The expanded vehicle fueling system can also support additional users in St. Landry Parish.
The vehicle fuel system, commissioned in 2012, also includes an additional BioCNG system and a remote CNG fueling station in the City of Opelousas which dispenses BioCNG via mobile transport. BioCNG, LLC, which partnered with the District to develop the original system, designed, installed, and commissioned the new &ldquo;primary-satellite&rdquo; BioCNG station format which is the first of its kind in the United States.
&ldquo;On behalf of the district, I am delighted to celebrate the expanded facility&rsquo;s completion, which has been a year in the making,&rdquo; said St. Landry Parish Solid Waste Disposal District executive director Katry Martin. &ldquo;Progressive Waste has been successfully using the facility, and is now fueling 10 refuse trucks per day with an estimated annual consumption of 120,000 diesel gallon equivalents.&rdquo;
"We are proud to be a leader in the conversion of refuse trucks from diesel to natural gas fleets that delivers on our commitment to create a more sustainable future," said Bruce Emley, area manager in Louisiana for Progressive Waste Solutions. &ldquo;CNG is a cleaner source of fuel and by converting to it, we provide our customers in the communities we serve a more environmentally friendly approach to collecting residential and commercial waste and recyclable materials.&rdquo;
Steven Wittmann, BioCNG, LLC, project manager said, &ldquo;BioCNG&rsquo;s four year relationship with the district has been gratifying and we are proud to see the expanded BioCNG fueling station come to fruition.&rdquo;
The St. Landry Parish BioCNG Vehicle Fuel Project received the U.S. EPA&rsquo;s Landfill Methane Outreach Program 2012 Project of the Year award. Since the project&rsquo;s inception, the St. Landry Parish Landfill has reduced approximately 1,200 tons of CO2 emissions, and that number is expected to increase to over 2,200 tons of CO2 per year.
