Originally from Clark, South Dakota, Hanson moved to North Dakota to pursue his collegiate education at North Dakota State University. There, he studied journalism, public relations and political science to obtain a degree in political science, public relations and advertising.
After graduating in May 2010, Hanson worked for companies such as Best Buy, Wells Fargo and Absolute Marketing. After three years, he accepted a job in January 2013 at BBI International as a staff writer for Biomass Magazine, Ethanol Producer Magazine, The Bakken Magazine and Pellet Mill Quarterly.
