Gates injects $100 million in algae company

Aquaflow biofuel technology shows potential

New Zealand-based Aquaflow Bionomic Corp. has announced that it has produced its first samples of green-crude from wild and natural algae. The company said the green-crude differs slightly from first-generation biofuels because it's made solely from photosynthetic microorganisms.READ MORE

UOP, Ensyn to form joint venture company

UOP LLC, an Illinois-based Honeywell subsidiary, and Ontario-based Ensyn Corp. announced Sept. 10 that they have signed a letter of intent to form a joint venture company. The new entity will license technology and equipment that will convert biomass into oil used for power generation, and in heating and transportation fuels.READ MORE

ISU breaks ground on biorenewables laboratory

Iowa State University broke ground on a $32 million, 166,000-square-foot biorenewable laboratory Sept. 8. The lab is part of a $99 million biorenewable complex, including a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center that will focus on developing catalysts that promote chemical reactions to efficiently produce biorenewable chemicals.READ MORE software gauges supply, demand LLC, a national distributor of biomass that specializes in wood pellets, has developed proprietary software that allows the company to gauge biomass demand and locate supply throughout the United States. Genencor, Goodyear to create tires from biomass

Genencor, a Division of Danisco A/S, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. have announced that they are working together to develop a process to convert biomass into BioIsoprene, a potential ingredient in synthetic rubber and other elastomers. BioIsoprene is expected to serve as an alternative to isoprene derived from petroleum.READ MORE

Nexterra to provide ORNL with biomass system

Vancouver, British Columbia-based Nexterra Energy Corp., a developer and supplier of biomass gasification systems, will supply the U.S. DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee with a multi-million-dollar gasification system.READ MORE
