Covanta Energy to build UK waste-to-energy plant

Covanta Energy plans to build a 70-megawatt waste-to-energy power plant in Merthyr, Wales, United Kingdom, which will produce enough electricity to power up to 180,000 homes. The facility is expected to process 875,000 tons of waste annually.READ MORE

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell recently announced the state will fund 49 clean energy and biofuel projects, including five relating to biomass-to-energy. Three of the grants were awarded to anaerobic digester projects.READ MORE

The USDA and U.S. DOE issued a joint funding opportunity announcement on Jan. 30, stating that up to $25 million will be granted to the research and development of technologies and processes to produce biofuels, bioenergy and high-value biobased products.READ MORE

House: Stimulus bill includes biomass provisions

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 on Jan. 28. The stimulus bill includes a number of provisions relating to the renewable energy and biofuels industries, such as extending the production tax credit for biomass energy until 2013 and allocating $2 million for energy efficiency and renewable energy research, development, demonstration and deployment activities.READ MORE
