UK awards CfDs to 2 dedicated biomass with CHP projects The U.K. Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has announced Contracts for Difference (CfD) have been awarded to 11 new projects, including two dedicated biomass power plants with combined-heat-and-power (CHP). EIA predicts increased bioenergy capacity in 2018 The U.S. Energy Information Administration has released the September edition of its Short-Term Energy Outlook, which includes updated forecasts for electricity production and generation capacity from wood and waste biomass. READ MORE SHARE
Saxlund provides fuel handling systems to 2 UK bioenergy plants In the U.K., Saxlund International recently announced it is supplying fuel handling systems to the Tansterne Advanced Biomass Project and a green gas generation plant under construction by Advanced Power and Cadent. READ MORE SHARE
UK government opens competition to develop waste-based fuels The U.K. government is offering funding to support the development of waste-based fuels for planes and trucks through its Future Fuels for Flight and Freight Completion. Södra to produce biobased methanol in Sweden In Europe, international forestry group Södra has announced plans to produce biobased methanol from forest biomass at its mill in Mönsterås, Sweden. Vermont PUC approves RNG program for Vermont Gas customers The Vermont Public Utility Commission has approved a program for Vermont Gas Systems Inc. that allows retail customers to buy renewable natural gas in amounts equal to 10 percent, 25 percent, 50 percent, or 100 percent of their monthly requirements. Researchers invent novel process for extracting sugars from wood A University of Delaware research team has invented a more efficient process for extracting the sugars from wood chips, corn cobs and other organic waste. Researchers announce promising new feedstock for bio-jet fuel A Boeing 747 burns one gallon of jet fuel each second. A recent analysis from researchers at the University of Illinois estimate that this aircraft could fly for 10 hours on bio-jet fuel produced on 54 acres of specially engineered sugarcane. DOE announces up to $8.8 million for algae technologies The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the selection of four additional projects from the Productivity Enhanced Algae and ToolKits funding opportunity to receive up to $8.8 million.
