New legislation introduced June 26 aims to put the U.S. on a path towards decarbonization, requiring 50 percent of U.S. electricity to be generated by renewables by 2035. Biomass and biogas would help meet that goal.

UK law commits to net-zero emissions, REA says BECCS is needed


The U.K. officially established a law June 27 requiring net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Earlier in the week, the U.K. REA released a paper outlining the role biorenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) can play in meeting that goal.

FuelCell Energy, Drax announce new carbon capture project


FuelCell Energy Inc. announced June 27 it has entered into a contract with Drax Power Station for an application of its carbon capture solution. Drax secured £500,000 ($633,503) in government funding to support the project.

EPA: More than 31.11 million cellulosic RINs generated in May


The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) data for May, reporting that nearly 1.57 billion RINs were generated during the month, including more than 31.11 million cellulosic RINs.

41 MW biomass power plant inaugurated in UK


The U.K.-based Templeborough Biomass Power Plant was officially inaugurated June 24. Located in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, the 41 MW facility takes in waste wood as fuel and can generate enough electricity to power 78,000 homes.

Margam Green Energy Plant begins operations in the UK


The U.K.-based Margam Green Energy Plant has entered commercial operation. The £160 million renewable energy plant, fueled by waste wood, will generate power for up to 75,000 homes. The facility is owned by Glennmont Partners.

EIA to update data reporting for biofuels


The U.S. Energy Information Administration is seeking a three-year extension with changes to its Petroleum Supply Reporting System. The proposed changes include those related to biofuels reporting. Comments are due July 24.

Greenlane secures biogas upgrading contract for Oregon project


Greenlane Biogas North America Ltd. has secured a new CDN $2.7 million-dollar biogas upgrading contract with the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission in Lane County, Oregon. Greenlane will provide its PSA solution to the facility.

U.S. EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation William Wehrum will leave his post at the agency at the end of June. Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator Anne Idsal will become acting assistant administrator for air and radiation.
