Andigestion&rsquo;s new &pound;9 million ($14.04 million) anaerobic digestion facility in Bishop&rsquo;s Cleeve near Cheltenham, U.K., has been officially opened by farmer and rural TV presenter Adam Henson. As pioneers of anaerobic digestion in the U.K., Andigestion is turning Gloucestershire&rsquo;s food waste into renewable energy for local homes and the by-product, organic liquid fertilizer, will be used by local farmers.
Having secured a contract with Gloucestershire County Council to collect and treat food waste from homes across the county&rsquo;s district councils, Andigestion is also working with schools and food businesses throughout Gloucestershire to help them increase recycling and reduce costs.
Cllr Ray Theodoulou, deputy leader and cabinet member responsible for waste at Gloucestershire County Council, said, &ldquo;The new Andigestion plant will play an important role in helping Gloucestershire County Council achieve its aspiration to divert as much waste as possible from disposal.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Sending the county&rsquo;s food waste to Andigestion&rsquo;s anaerobic digestion has real environmental benefits. The facility produces clean, green energy and we can save local taxpayers&rsquo; money to spend on other essential services.&rdquo;
&ldquo;We are really grateful that so many residents take part in food waste recycling and hope that others, by learning about the plant, will see how important it is and join in.&rdquo;
The official opening was carried out by Henson, who presents a range of much loved TV wildlife and farming programs and was attended by stakeholders, local dignitaries and many of the people directly involved in the project.
&ldquo;As a farmer and conservationist, I&rsquo;m delighted to officially open the new Andigestion plant in Bishop&rsquo;s Cleeve,&rdquo; Henson said. &ldquo;We have a common interest in protecting the environment, investing in sustainable practices and promoting a circular economy. I am extremely keen to learn more about anaerobic digestion and its sustainability to help Gloucestershire lead the way in everyday environmental action.&rdquo;
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s great to receive so much support for our official opening,&rdquo; said Jason Ward, commercial manager at Andigestion. &ldquo;Anaerobic digestion is currently the only renewable technology scalable to meet 2020 climate change targets. By encouraging more people and businesses to recycle their food waste, we can ensure that increasing amounts of gas used by Gloucestershire homes come from renewable sources.&rdquo;
