Technology providers and producers are working to scale biocoal as a drop-in replacement for fossil steam coal, opening a potentially massive market for thermally treated biomass.
The Placer County Planning Commission has approved a use permit for the proposed Cabin Creek Biomass Facility. The project is designed to convert locally, sustainably sourced woody biomass and other materials into biochar and other products.
The recent announcement by Finch Paper that it will close its pulp mill in Glens Falls, New York, underscores the urgent need for alternative solutions capable of utilizing low-grade wood and forestry waste across Vermont and the Northeastern U.S.
The U.S. Forest Service on Aug. 5 warded $105.5 million in wood innovation grants to 177 projects across the nation. Funded projects include those focused on biochar, bioenergy and wood pellet production.
