DTE Vantage commissioned a new renewable natural gas (RNG) project this month in conjunction with the City of Dayton Water Reclamation Facility, which treats residential and industrial wastewater from Dayton and neighboring communities. This effort is enabled by a new pipeline connecting the City of Dayton’s wastewater facility with existing RNG processing resources that Vantage owns and operates.“This RNG project is a prime example of how waste material from various sources can be converted to deliver environmental benefits in communities across the country,” said Kevin Dobson, vice president of biomass, DTE Vantage. “This is Vantage’s first-ever RNG project utilizing wastewater treatment biogas as a source and demonstrates our ability to find creative solutions to reduce greenhouse gases in any community.”Vantage has a renewable natural gas processing facility nearby and is uniquely positioned to process wastewater-derived biogas in a cost-effective solution, allowing the City of Dayton to take full advantage of the valuable renewable energy associated with its biogas. Vantage’s growing portfolio of processing facilities is continually expanding the RNG opportunities for communities like Dayton, which benefits by not only reducing its carbon footprint but also generating income from the sale of the renewable natural gas.The Dayton Water Reclamation Facility currently uses the biogas generated onsite for heating of anaerobic digesters and ancillary buildings on the campus as well as in co-generation engines for peak shaving of the electrical grid.“We are very excited about this new renewable natural gas project as it will reduce the overall City’s carbon footprint by 50 percent,” said Chris Clark, water reclamation division manager with the City of Dayton’s Water Department. “The City looks forward to this partnership with DTE as we move toward a greener environment.”In addition to its first wastewater facility, Vantage developed and operates 15 facilities in the U.S. that convert methane from landfill gas or dairy cow manure into sustainable RNG while offering compensation to its host partners.
