The number of U.S. households that use wood as a primary heating fuel is expected to fall by 1 percent this winter, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Winter Fuels Outlook 2023-24, which was released on Oct. 11.&nbsp;Overall winter heating prices for U.S. households are expected to remain relatively flat or decrease this season, depending on the main heating used and the region in which they are located, according to the EIA.&nbsp;Temperatures in the Western U.S. are expected to be warmer this winter when compared to winter 2022-23, which was much colder than average. Temperatures in the eastern portion of the country are expected to be slightly colder than last winter, but warmer than the 10-year average. Temperatures in the South, Northeast and Midwest are all expected to be colder than last winter.&nbsp;Across the U.S., approximately 1.77 million households are expected to use wood as a primary heating fuel this winter, down 1 percent when compared to last winter. The decline of wood as a primary heating fuel is most pronounced in the Northeast where 347,000 households are expected to use wood as a primary heating fuel, down 6 percent when compared to last winter. In the Midwest, 430,000 households are expected to use wood as a primary heating fuel, up slightly from 429,000 households last winter. The EIA predicts that 611,000 households will heat primarily with wood in the South, down 1 percent from last winter.
