Renewables are currently expected to account for 24 percent of U.S. renewable electricity generation in 2024, up from 22 percent in 2023 and 21 percent in 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released on Dec. 12.Biomass is expected to account for approximately 2.31 percent of renewables electricity generation in 2024, compared to 2.51 percent in 2023 and 2.72 percent in 2022, according to EIA data.&nbsp;Biomass is currently expected to be used to generate 21.9 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity in 2023, increasing to 22.9 billion kWh in 2024. Biomass generation was at 23.7 billion kWh in 2022.&nbsp;The electric power sector had 2.9 gigawatts (GW) of waste biomass capacity and 2.4 GW of wood biomass capacity in place at the end of 2022. Those levels of capacity are currently expected to remain stable through 2023 and 2024.&nbsp;The industrial and commercial sectors had an estimated 5.4 GW of wood biomass capacity in place at the end of 2022. Capacity is expected to fall to 5.3 GW by the end of this year and remain at that level through 2024. The sector also had 1.4 GW of waste biomass capacity in place at the end of 2022, with capacity expected to remain at that level in 2023 and 2024.The electric sector consumed an estimated 0.176 quadrillion Btu (quad) of waste biomass in 2022, with consumption expected to fall to 0.168 quad in 2023 and rebound slightly to 0.169 quad in 2024. The sector also consumed 0.198 quad of waste biomass in 2022, with consumption expected to fall to 0.172 quad in 2023 and expand to 0.187 quad in 2024.&nbsp;The industrial sector consumed 0.161 quad of waste biomass in 2022, with consumption expected to be at 0.16 quad this year and 0.158 quad next year. The sector also consumed 1.308 quad of wood biomass in 2022, with consumption expected to be at 1.245 quad in 2023 and 1.317 quad in 2024.&nbsp;The commercial sector consumed 0.075 quad of waste biomass last year and is expected to consume 0.072 quad in 2023 and 2024. The sector also consumed 0.083 quad of wood biomass in 2022, with consumption expected to be at 0.082 quad this year and next year.&nbsp;The residential sector is expected to consume 0.441 quad of wood biomass in both 2023 and 2024, up from 0.422 quad in 2022.Across all sectors, waste biomass consumption was at 0.412 quad in 2022 and is expected to fall to 0.4 quad in 2023 and 0.399 quad in 2024. Wood biomass consumption was at 2.012 quad last year and is expected to fall to 1.94 quad this year, increasing to 2.027 quad in 2024.&nbsp;
