Grocery chain Kroger has brought a new anaerobic digester on line that is generating biogas from food waste to help power its distribution center in Compton, Calif.
The Kroger Recovery System will annually divert 55,000 tons of food that cannot be sold or donated into renewable energy for Food 4 Less&rsquo;s 650,000-square-foot distribution center. The digester will produce enough biogas to offset more than 20 percent of the energy demand of the distribution center. Along with providing power to the distribution center, the biogas will power more than 150 zero-emission fork lifts.
&ldquo;We are committed to finding solutions for food waste and clean energy, and we believe this is a meaningful step forward,&rdquo; said Rodney McMullen, president and chief operating officer of Kroger. &ldquo;Investing in this project is a good business decision for Kroger and, most importantly, an extraordinary opportunity to benefit the environment.&rdquo;
Kendra Doyel, a media representative from Kroger, said the project was phased in over the past three years and hopes more company-owned locations will incorporate similar technologies. She added the location for the project was selected due to the company was already back hauling the food to compost.
The digester was designed by Boston&rsquo;s FEED Resource Recovery Inc.
