Polish power provider GDF Suez has inaugurated what it says is the largest 100-percent biomass-fuelled power plant in the world.
The 205-MW facility is in Polaneic in south Poland, and was physically complete at the end of last year. It is located at the site of the utility&rsquo;s existing 1,780-MW coal/biomass cofired thermal plant, GDF Suez Energia Polska.
Construction of the plant, dubbed &ldquo;The Green Unit,&rdquo; began in 2010, engineered by Tractebel Engineering. Foster Wheeler supplied a circulating fluidized bed boiler believed to be the largest ever deployed at a biomass power plant, and BRUKS Kl&ouml;ckner supplied the chipping line, including the drum chipper and handling equipment,
Fuel for the plant consists of a mixture of by-products from treefarming&mdash;80 percent&mdash; and 20 percent agriculture, according to GFD. A company spokeswoman previously told Biomass Magazine that the facility would consume 222,000 tons of agri-fuels and 890,000 tons of woody biomass each year.
The plant will provide the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 600,000 households, according to GDF, and will make a substantial contribution to Poland&rsquo;s energy policy of 15 percent installed renewable energy capacity by 2020.
