Kent Renewable Energy Ltd. officially celebrated the opening of its biomass-fired combined-heat-and-power (CHP) plant on Sept. 28. The 27-MW facility, located in Sandwich, U.K., began commercial operations earlier in the month.
Several local officials were on hand to celebrate the opening of the facility, including Member of Parliament Craig Mackinlay and Sandwich Mayor Veronica Liote.
Construction on the plant began in mid-2016 and was completed on budget and two months ahead of schedule&mdash;only 25 months after financial close. <a href="http://biomassmagazine.com/articles/15068/uk-biomass-chp-plant-begins-commissioning" target="_blank">Commissioning began</a> in February 2018. The plant <a href="http://biomassmagazine.com/articles/15600/uk-bioenergy-plant-begins-commercial-operations" target="_blank">began commercial operations</a> on Sept. 13.&nbsp;
Kent Renewable Energy is majority owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, a Danish infrastructure fund. The plant was developed by Estover Energy Ltd. and built by Burmeister &amp; Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S, which will also operate and maintain the facility. The plant is fueled with locally sourced wood supplied by EuroForest.
The facility can produce enough power to supply the equivalent of 50,000 homes while offsetting 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The plant also provides heat and power to Discovery Park, a science park in Kent, U.K. Excess power is exported to the local electricity grid.
&ldquo;We couldn&rsquo;t be happier to have formally opened our combined heat and power plant,&rdquo; said Christina Grumstrup S&oslash;rensen, senior partner of CIP. &ldquo;It has been great to celebrate the day with our customer, Discovery Park and some of their tenants and our Danish partners and investors, together with many of the authorities and organizations whose work with us has been invaluable in bringing our project to fruition.&rdquo;
