The U.K. Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has released energy statistics for the second quarter, reporting that the renewables&rsquo; share of electricity generation reached a record high 29.8 percent during the three-month period. When compared to the same period of 2016, the renewables share increased 4.4 percent.
A total of 22.5 TWh of renewable electricity was generated in the U.K. during the second quarter, up 13.6 percent when compared to the 19.8 TWh generated during the second quarter of last year. Renewable electricity capacity was 38 GW at the end of the quarter, up 13.2 percent when compared to the same period of last year.
The production of bioenergy and waste was up 3 percent when compared to the second quarter of 2016, while coal production fell 28 percent and reached a record low. The report also shows that generation from bioenergy was down 0.5 percent with increased generation from biodegradable waste offset by reduced generation from landfill gas and plant biomass.
Approximately 8.47 TWh of electricity was generated from bioenergy sources, including cofiring, during the quarter, up 1.7 percent when compared to the same period of last year.&nbsp;
