The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has released its Energy Infrastructure Update for June 2014, reporting the U.S. added 28 new biomass power generation units during the first half of the year with a combined capacity of 87 MW. During the same period of last year, the U.S. added 53 biomass units with a combined capacity of 136 MW.
The U.S. added a total of 180 power generation units during the first half of 2014 with a combined 3,529 MW of capacity. During the same period of last year, 253 units with a combined 8,496 MW of capacity were placed into service. In addition to the biomass power capacity placed into service during the first six months of the year, the U.S. also added 5 hydro units with a combined 16 MW of capacity, 18 wind units with 699 MW of capacity, five geothermal steam units with 32 MW of capacity and 102 solar units with 1,131 MW of capacity. In addition, 18 natural gas units with a combined 1,555 MW of capacity, and 2 oil units with a combined 10 MW of capacity were placed into service. No new coal, nuclear, or waste heat units were brought online during the first half of the year.
In June, the U.S. added two biomass units with a combined capacity of 5 MW. Overall, the U.S. added 26 energy generation units last month, with a combined 146 MW of capacity. In addition to the biomass units, two hydro units with a combined 8 MW of capacity, two wind units with a combined 21 MW of capacity and 11 units with a combined 40 MW of capacity were placed into service. In addition, eight natural gas units with a combined 63 MW of capacity and one oil unit with 9 MW of capacity were placed into the service. No coal, nuclear, geothermal steam or waste heat units were placed into service during the month.
As of the close of June, there was 16.05 MW of U.S. biomass power capacity in the U.S., equating to 1.37 percent of total U.S. capacity. Of the non-hydro renewables, only wind has a greater share of U.S. power capacity. Overall, the U.S. has 1,161.72 GW of installed operating generating capacity.&nbsp;
