Waste Management recently published its 2017 Sustainability Report, which provides a brief overview of the company&rsquo;s landfill gas-to-energy operations and waste-to-energy goals.
MW has set a goal to produce enough waste-based energy to meet the annual needs of 2 million households by 2020. In 2016, the company produced enough waste-based energy to power approximately 470,000 homes. Prior to the divestiture of its Wheelabrator waste-to-energy business in 2014, WM produced enough energy to power 1.08 million households.
The sustainability report also indicates that MW currently operates 131 landfill-gas-to-energy facilities. On its website, MW states that plans to continue to expand its energy projects over the coming years.
The sustainability report notes that WM&rsquo;s renewable energy generation avoided approximately 2.252 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent GHG emissions in 2016, up from 1.04 million metric tons in 2015.
