Equipment manufacturers are designing harvesting and handling machinery tailored to biomass material, but marketing those systems outside of Europe is proving difficult without robust biomass markets.
The biomass briquette business is rebounding after enduring tough economic times that drove some interest away from the industry.
Researchers in Missouri have developed a biomass compactor they say can produce tablets with higher material density, and therefore higher energy density, than other unified biomass products on the market.
Researchers in the Southern U.S. are drilling into the challenges of establishing dedicated energy crops such as switchgrass in anticipation of increased demand.
A proposed new Maximum Achievable Control Technology standard that would impose stricter hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emission limits and other requirements on biomass boilers and process heaters could lead to greater expenditures, and the financial

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack's announcement of USDA cost share for 10,000 blender pumps over the next five years is good news for the industry. The money is to come from existing funding, through existing programs - all of which means the infrastructure effort can begin rolling quickly. (Well, quickly for a program coming out of Washington.)

The USDA's National Biofuels Strategy should focus just as much on heating oil as it does on transportation fuels, according to Charlie Niebling, an organizer and member of the Northeast Biomass Thermal Working Group.
A grower-owned energy cooperative in Oregon has begun harvesting its first crop of high-biomass sorghum, a purpose-grown energy crop that will be used for electricity production. Agri Energy Producers Association will harvest about 1,500 acres.
The Biomass Power Association submitted comments contesting a proposed ruling by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources on biomass, on the grounds that it will severely handicap the state's ability to meet its renewable energy goals.
Biomass projects can be delayed or derailed if the developers fail to do their due diligence when choosing a site. Presenters at the Southeast Biomass Conference & Trade Show Nov. 2-4 in Atlanta will be armed with advice for project developers.
The search for more efficient enzymes used for biofuel production continues in Europe. The EU is funding a project called DISCO to develop, research and find more effective enzymes to produce cellulosic ethanol.
