By now, I'm sure you've all read or heard about Robotic Technology Inc. and Cyclone Power Technologies' biomass-eating robot that can power itself by consuming organic material, which is being funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a U.S. Department of Defense research organization.

There are a couple of programs that you should be aware of, starting with USDA¡¦s funding for bioenergy development and production. This week, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA is accepting applications for up to $50 million in projects to promote the production and use of biofuels. This program is in the 2008 Farm Bill.

A couple of new studies could throw a monkey wrench into some forest management plans to use thinning techniques to mitigate forest fires. The studies basically concluded that Pacific Northwest forests can store huge amounts of carbon dioxide if they aren't disturbed.
