Renewables are currently expected to account for 23% of U.S. electricity generation in 2024, increasing to 25% in 2025, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released June 11. Renewables accounted for 21% of U.S. electricity generation last year.Biomass is expected to account for approximately 2.23% of U.S. renewable electricity generation this year, falling to 2.04% in 2025. Biomass accounted for 2.44% of U.S. renewable electricity generation in 2023.According to the EIA, biomass is expected to be used to generate 2.14 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity in both 2024 and 2024, up from 21.1 billion kWh in 2023.&nbsp;The electric power sector had 2.9 gigawatts (GW) of waste biomass capacity and 2.3 GW of wood biomass power capacity in place as of the end of 2023. Those levels of capacity are expected to be maintained through 2024 and 2025.&nbsp;The industrial and commercial sectors had 5.2 GW of wood biomass capacity in place as of the end of last year, with capacity expected to increase to 5.3 GW by the end of this year and be maintained at that level in 2025. Wood biomass capacity was at 1.4 GW in 2023 and is expected to remain at that level in 2024, falling to 1.3 GW in 2025.The electric power sector consumed 0.167 quadrillion Btus (quad) of waste biomass in 2023. Consumption is expected to remain at that level in 2024, falling to 0.165 quad in 2025. The sector also consumed 0.162 quad of wood biomass last year, with consumption expected to increase to 0.172 quad in 2024 and 0.174 quad in 2025.&nbsp;The industrial sector consumed 0.16 quad of waste biomass last year, with that level of consumption expected to continue in 2024 and 2025. The sector also consumed 1.224 quad of wood biomass last year, with consumption expected to increase to 1.32 quad this year and 1.375 quad next year.&nbsp;The commercial sector consumed 0.071 quad of waste biomass and 0.082 quad of wood biomass last year, with those levels of consumption expected to be maintained in both 2024 and 2025.&nbsp;The residential sector is expected to consume 0.443 quad of wood biomass in both 2024 and 2025, down from 0.45 quad in 2023.Across all sectors, waste biomass consumption was at 0.398 quad in 2023 and is expected to increase to 0.399 quad this year, falling to 0.396 quad next year. Wood biomass consumption was at 1.918 quad last year and is expected to expand to 2.017 quad in 2024 and 2.075 quad in 2025.&nbsp;
