Okamura, in collaboration with DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, launched the company’s first office furniture coated with a biobased powder coating made with Susterra l,3-propanediol. Susterra propanediol is a biobased ingredient used in a high-performing powder coating that has a biomass mark from the Japan Organic Recycling Association.

Susterra is certified 100 percent biobased by the USDA, making it attractive for companies seeking to add renewable content to their products. A peer reviewed life cycle assessment (LCA) demonstrates that the production of biobased propanediol offers significant environmental benefits including up to 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions and 40 percent less non-renewable energy used in production vs. petroleum-based glycols.

“Susterra is an alternative glycol that offers both high performance and sustainability in coating applications,” said Lirys Crawford, market development manager at DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. “We are proud to work with Okamura, which is leading the industry by offering attractive office furniture that also has a reduced environmental footprint.”

“As a manufacturer, Okamura believes that making efforts to reduce our environmental impact is an extremely important business challenge,” said Nakamura, president of Okamura. “We are excited to partner with DuPont Tate & Lyle to introduce renewable and more sustainable content to customers seeking high-quality office furniture.”
