The U.S. Department of Energy on Aug. 28 released its annual U.S. Energy and Employment Report, reporting that bioenergy electric power generation (EPG) jobs were up slightly last year. Employment in wood biomass and cellulosic fuels were also up.The bioenergy EPG sector employed 12,857 workers last year, up 0.1% when compared to 2022. The largest job gains were in the utilities industry.The bioenergy EPG workforce employed 31% woman, higher than the overall energy workforce average of 26% but lower than the economy-wide workforce average of 47%.&nbsp;Veterans, at 11%, were more represented in the bioenergy EPG workforce than in the 9% in the energy workforce overall and the 5% of workers in the overall national workforce.&nbsp;The 12,857 bioenergy EPG workforce included 5,550 employed in construction, 2,834 in professional and business services, 2,367 in utilities, 1,091 in manufacturing, 611 in wholesale trade, and 404 in other services. The vast majority of employers in these industries reported hiring for bioenergy EPG was very difficult or somewhat difficult last year.&nbsp;The wood biomass and cellulosic biofuels sector employed 34,542 workers last year, up 1.1% when compared to 2022. The largest gains were in the professional and businesses services industry.The woody biomass and cellulosic biofuel sector had 30% female workers last year, compared to the 26% in the overall energy workforce and 47% in the overall U.S. workforce.&nbsp;Approximately 15% of workers in woody biomass and cellulosic biofuel sector were veterans, compared to the energy workforce average of 9% and other national workforce average of 5%.&nbsp;Of the 34,542 workers in woody biomass and cellulosic fuels, 18,097 were employed in agriculture and forestry, 10,770 were employed in professional and businesses services, 4,610 were employed in manufacturing, 1,024 were employed in wholesale trade and 42 were employed in other services.
