Italy-based energy company Eni has announced plans to develop a 500,000-metric-ton-per-year biorefinery at its existing industrial site in Priolo, Sicily. The facility, which will produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), is expected to be operational in 2028.&nbsp;Eni on Oct. 9 said it has launched the authorization process for the environmental impact assessment (VIA) to retrofit the Priolo site. The company also noted the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has approved the application to proceed with the construction of a biorefinery and a chemical recycling plant.&nbsp;The project will be developed at the current site of Versalis’ ethylene plant. Versalis is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eni that specializes in the production of chemicals. The existing ethylene plant will be gradually decommissioned, according to Eni.&nbsp;The planned biorefinery will feature Ecofining technology to produce renewable diesel and SAF from waste, animal fat and vegetable oil feedstocks. The facility will also include a biogenic feedstock pretreatment unit and a hydrogen production facility.&nbsp;The planned project also includes the development of a chemical recycling facility that will feature Versalis’ proprietary Hoop pyrolysis technology. The chemical recycling facility will have the capacity to process 40,000 metric tons per year of mixed plastic packaging waste, producing approximately 32,000 metric tons per year of pyrolysis oil.Eni previously announced a goal to increase biorefinery capacity from the current 1.65 million metric tons per year to more than 3 million metric tons in 2028 and over 5 million metric tons in 2030, with the potential to produce up to 2 million metric tons of SAF annually by 2030.&nbsp;Eni, through its Enilive business, already produces biofuels at its facilities in Venice, Italy; Gela, Italy; and Chalmette, Louisiana. The company is expected to begin operations at a biorefinery in Livorno, Italy, in 2026, and at a biorefinery in Pavia, Italy, in 2028. Enilive is also developing biorefinery projects in Malaysia and South Korea.&nbsp;
