Solarig on April 3 announced plans to develop a commercial scale biorefinery in Spain that will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from renewable natural gas (RNG) and renewable electricity.&nbsp;The NUMANTIA SAF project will have the capacity to produce 60,000 metric tons of SAF annually via two production paths, a gas-to-liquids (GtL) process and a power-to-liquids (PtL) process. The GtL portion of the plant will reform biomethane obtained from the valorization of local agricultural and livestock waste, while the PtL production pathway will combine biogenic carbon dioxide with renewable hydrogen.&nbsp;According to Solarig, all the processes involved in the plant will be powered by renewable energy, with the facility incorporating a 370 megawatt (MW) polar photovoltaic plant, a 50 MW wind farm and 100 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery storage capacity. The company also noted it has committed to the capture and utilization of 140,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.&nbsp;“A few months ago, Solarig launched the development of a biomethane strategy in Castilla y León, and today Solarig is announcing a pioneering project in the world with a fully circular approach: it involves the use and recovery of biogas produced from our agricultural and livestock waste together with renewable resources: water, wind and sun,” said Miguel Ángel Calleja,&nbsp;president and CEO of Solarig. “By combining these local resources with the latest technology, Solarig&nbsp; will be able to join the sustainable fuel economy that is now emerging. I firmly believe that this initiative will allow us to retain enormous added value at the local level, generate quality jobs and boost economic growth in Castilla y León.”In its April 5 announcement, Solarig said it has reached an agreement to acquire a 116,000-square-meter plot of land to develop the project. The company also announced plans to develop a new regional corporate headquarters to support development of the project.
