EPA solicits applications for RE-Powering America's Land

The U.S. EPA is soliciting applications from states, tribes, regional governments and communities that are interested in the development of renewable energy on current and formerly contaminated properties.
West Virginia University may now be the unofficial leader in liquid coal and biomass research, but not without a little help from China. In early April a team of WVU researchers will begin a project testing an FT fuel made of coal and biomass.
Construction may begin this fall to expand Marquis Energy LLC at Hennepin, Ill. “We're basically planning to double the size of the plant, for the most part a mirror image of the existing facility,� said Mark Marquis.
Taking the pellet plunge

In researching story leads for the inaugural issue of Biomass Power & Thermal's biannual publication Pellet Mill Magazine, my fellow editors and I found the biomass pellet industry to be much more competitive than we thought.
As the number of landfills continues to dwindle, Green Power Technologies Inc. believes North America could learn a lesson from the British, who widely use organic portions of municipal solid waste in biomass energy processes.

It would be nice if President Obama would put a little more emphasis on biomass power and thermal opportunities when he addresses the nation about clean energy and energy independence.
Neste Oil is serious about expanding the range of feedstocks used to produce its renewable diesel product, NexBTL. The company has received a loan totaling roughly $70 million for research and development from the Nordic Investment Bank.
The much-anticipated spring report indicates corn growers intend to plant 92.2 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2011, up 5 percent from last year and 7 percent higher than in 2009 and just behind the 93.5 million acres planted in 2007.
Plans for a proposed cellulosic ethanol plant at Spiritwood, N.D., located near Jamestown in south-central portion of the state, have been revamped following the completion of a comprehensive feedstock supply and marketing study.
Cargill buys Fort Dodge wet mill ethanol plant from Tate & Lyle

Cargill announced it has purchased Tate & Lyle's corn wet mill ethanol plant in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
REX American Resources Corp., an investor in seven ethanol plants, recently released financial results for its fourth quarter of 2010 and the 2010 fiscal year.
Ethanol is the superior molecule for renewable fuels, argues Coskata's Rathin Datta, in a study done in collaboration with GM, and the biomass-to-ethanol conversion enjoys natural efficiencies.
RISI and PFI to develop pellet manufacturing survey

RISI and PFI are collaborating on a monthly North American pellet survey of prices, production, fiber sourcing, inventories and end-use markets. RISI will collect and aggregate the information and the findings will be made available to PFI members.
ReEnergy to acquire another biomass plant

Waste fuel/biomass energy company ReEnergy Holdings has announced its second proposed biomass power plant acquisition this month, entering into an agreement with Central Hudson Enterprises Corp. for its Lyonsdale Biomass Facility in Lyon Falls, N.Y.
Solix Biofuels Inc. has secured $16 million from inside investors as part of a Series B finance round. It also changed its name to Solix BioSystems to better reflect its role as an algae production systems provider, said Joanna Money, vice president.
PetroAlgae has formed a partnership to upgrade the Melbourne, Fla.-based company's algae oil technology, and the upgrade comes from a known, traditional method: catalysis. The partnership is with Haldor Topsoe's U.S. subsidiary based in Houston.
The U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.K. Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council have collaborated to issue more than $10.3 million of jointly-awarded funding to four transatlantic research teams to enhance photosynthesis.
Following President Obama's speech on America's clean energy future, the U.S. DOE announced $12 million available in funding to support lab and pilot efforts in advanced biofuels, which may help as many as five projects in the next four years.

EPA streamlines regulations for car, truck fuel conversion units

The U.S. EPA has updated rules making it easier for manufacturers to sell systems converting vehicles to run on alternative fuels. The rules will vary based on vehicle age or the engine being converted.
BioProcess Algae, a joint venture including ethanol producer GPRE, will soon begin verifying a California-based biotech company's lipid production process for algae in addition to its own algae production project.
U.S. President Barack Obama released his administration's plan to reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil by one-third within the next 14 years, including support for alternative energy.
SUNY-ESF offering biomass internships
