WASDE projections lower corn ending stocks 70 million bushels

Increases in corn use for ethanol led the Feb. 9 USDA WASDE report. U.S. corn ending stocks for 2010-'11 are projected 70 million bushels lower for the lowest carryout-to-use ratio since the 1995-'96 marketing year.
In her testimony before a House energy and power subcommittee, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said a bill to stop EPA's enforcement of greenhouse gas regulations would prohibit the EPA from taking further actions to implement the RFS.
Ineos Bio JV got the gold shovels out Feb. 9 and broke ground at its facility that will produce 8 MMgy of cellulosic ethanol and six megawatts of electricity. The Indian River BioEnergy Center will use a gasification fermentation approach.

U.S. Sens. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., Max Baucus, D-Mont., Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., will host a biomass briefing at the Dirksen Senate Office building on Feb. 17 to discuss opportunities presented by biomass energy.

Novozymes is now officially in the biofertility business. In December, Novozymes acquired a Milwaukee-based biofertility solutions company, EMD/Merck Crop Bioscience Inc. for $283 million, and now the takeover is complete.
The Swedish Energy Agency believes in Chemrec AB's biorefinery technology used in Sweden, and now the European Commission does too. After the Energy Agency awarded the company a $75 million grant, the EU commission stated it supports the decision.
After 20 years of unsuccessful attempts to build an ethanol plant in Great Falls, Mont., Montana Ethanol Holdings LLC is one step closer to making the proposed plant a reality. The company has applied for the U.S. DOE loan guarantee program.

This week, corn ethanol was blamed for the unrest in Egypt, accused of driving up global food prices. The industry fired back, of course. Corn ethanol is one of many factors affecting demand, but hardly the most important.
When asked about eight possible actions U.S. Congress could take in 2011, more people favored an alternative energy bill. 82 percent said Congress should pass a bill that provides incentives for using solar and other alternative energy sources.

Clean-up work is under way at the scene of a train derailment and ethanol blaze that occurred near Arcadia, Ohio, in the early morning hours on Feb. 6. A 62-car train hauling ethanol was headed from Chicago to North Carolina when 31 cars derailed.
U.K. reviews feed-in tariff program

A low rate of anaerobic digestion (AD) development since the implementation of a feed-in tariff (FIT) to boost such projects has prompted the U.K.'s Department of Energy and Climate Change to review the tariff level, considering changes if need be.
The North Sea has been called the Saudi Arabia of wind, and the U.K. government has made a strong push for its use. But following the least windy year, by some accounts since 1894, one can't help but wonder how renewable energy goals might shift.
Houston-based KiOR Inc. received a term sheet for a loan guarantee from the U.S. DOE supporting a $1 billion-plus biofuels project. If approved, the company said it plans to use the funds to build four bio-oil plants.
