The debate over whether woody biomass from public lands should be included in the renewable energy standards in the American Clean Energy and Security Act continues. I am not even going to attempt to predict what the federal government will do. In the meantime, many officials from states and counties with an abundance of public forest lands are appealing to their congressmen to include public lands in the standard.

Last week, I received a call from a woman who lives in Hawaii and is concerned about the negative environmental impacts caused by cruise ships. The woman said the waste deposited by cruise ships and from Hawaii's inferior wastewater treatment plants are causing algae blooms in the beaches in Maui.

I don't know if you've been following this story, but a company called Russell Biomass LLC is developing a biomass project in Russell, Mass., that has been causing quite a stir. The project is a $165 million, 50 megawatt wood-burning power plant that will be built on a site that once was home to Westfield River Paper Co., which has been closed since 1994.
