As I edit the features for the annual 2012 Industry Outlook edition of Biomass Power & Thermal, it is refreshing to see all of the progress the industry has made despite the regulatory uncertainty.
A national panel led by Iowa State University engineers is launching an effort to research and develop technologies that capture, use and sequester carbon while enhancing food production, ecosystems, economic development and national security.

Energy crop developer New Energy Farms says it has developed a new system for establishing miscanthus that takes one-third the time of previous planting methods.
On Nov. 3, the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a $4 million award to KAAPA Ethanol LLC from Affiliated FM Insurance Co. for property damage to tanks used for ethanol production.
The International Energy Agency's latest World Energy Outlook predicts a rise in global oil demand of nearly 15 percent over the next 24 years, up to 99 million barrels per day in 2035, due to economic growth and rising populations.
A new study found that energy produced from forest biomass merely returns recently absorbed carbon to the atmosphere, and essentially results in no net release of carbon, provided overall forest inventories are stable or increasing.
USDA has selected 67 projects for funding that focus on helping rural agricultural producers reduce energy consumption and costs; use renewable energy technologies in their operation; and/or conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy projects.
