More than 1.7 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in August, up from 1.6 billion generated during the same period of last year, according to data released by the U.S. EPA on Sept. 16.

Nearly 46.79 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in August, including 37.04 million generated for compressed renewable natural gas (RNG) by domestic producers, 6.69 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 2.86 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, and 195,705 generated for liquefied RNG by importers.

Total D3 RIN generation for the first eight months of the year reached 314.71 million. That volume includes 247.79 million generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, 45.52 million generated for liquefied RNG by domestic producers, 20.23 million generated for compressed RNG by importers, 919,900 generated for liquefied RNG by importers, and 244,278 generated for cellulosic ethanol by domestic producers.

Nearly 421.3 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in August, including 231.52 million generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 126.83 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 45.3 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 16.57 million generated for biodiesel by importers, and 1.07 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers.

Total D4 RIN generation for the first eight months of 2021 reached nearly 3.01 billion. That volume includes 1.68 billion generated for biodiesel by domestic producers, 769.11 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 390.67 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, 159.04 million generated for biodiesel by importers, 5.71 million generated for renewable jet fuel by domestic producers, and 4.86 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by importers.

More than 31.86 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in August, including 14.79 million generated for ethanol by importers, 11.93 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 2.3 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 1.97 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 670,008 generated for LPG by domestic producers, 149,358 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers, and 54,634 generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers.

Total D5 RIN generation for the first eight months of the year reached 142.45 million. That volume includes 66.24 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by domestic producers, 38.01 million generated for ethanol by importers, 17.49 million generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 15.85 million generated for naphtha by domestic producers, 2.86 million generated for LPG by domestic producers, 1.31 million generated for renewable heating oil by domestic producers, and 708,041 generated for compressed RNG by domestic producers.

More than 1.21 billion D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in August, including nearly 1.21 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers and 4.52 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities.

Total D6 RIN generation for the first eight months of 2021 reached nearly 9.32 billion. That volume includes 9.23 billion generated for ethanol by domestic producers, 80.37 million generated for nonester renewable diesel by foreign entities, and 7.6 million generated for ethanol by importers.

No D7 cellulosic diesel RINs have been generated so far this year.

Total RIN generation for the first eight months of 2021 was at 12.78 billion, up from 11.76 billion generated during the same period of 2020.
