Denmark announces new biomass sustainability requirements


The Danish government announced a political agreement on Oct. 3 that establishes new sustainability requirements for woody biomass used to produce heat and electricity in Denmark. USIPA applauded the agreement, calling it strict but workable.

EIA: 1.8 million households to use wood as a primary heating fuel


The EIA released its Winter Fuels Outlook and an updated Short-Term Energy Outlook on Oct. 6, reporting that approximately 1.8 million households will use cord wood or wood pellets as their primarily residential spacing heating fuel this winter.

REG to expand Geismar capacity by 250 MMgy


Renewable Energy Group Inc. on Oct. 6 announced plans to expand the annual production capacity of its biorefinery in Geismar, Louisiana, to 340 MMgy. The 250 MMgy expansion project is expected to be complete by late 2023.

House passes bill that includes COVID-19 relief for biofuels


The U.S. House of Representatives on Oct. 1 passed an updated version of the Heroes Act by a vote of 214 to 207. The $2.2 billion COVID-19 stimulus package includes direct support for certain processed commodities, including biofuels.

EPA funds 12 anaerobic digestion projects


The U.S. EPA on Oct. 1 announced it is awarding $3 million to 12 food waste anaerobic digestion projects. The awards relate to the Winning on Reducing Food Waste Initiative, a partnership between the EPA, USDA and FDA that was launched in 2018.

Oberon Fuels applauds passage of California fuel tax bill


California Gov. Gavin Newson on Sept. 24 signed a bill into law that effectively allows dimethyl ether (DME) used as a diesel replacement or propane blend stock to be taxed at rate inline with other alternative fuels.

The Twin Rivers Unified School District near Sacramento, California, achieved a major milestone in its climate action plan by switching 75 diesel-powered school buses to run on renewable diesel fuel provided by Neste.

Pertamina to produce biofuels using Honeywell UOP technologies


Honeywell on Sept. 28 announced PT Pertamina (Persero) will use UOP Renewable Jet Fuel Process technology at its Plaju refinery in Palembang, South Sumatra, and UOP Ecofining technology at its Cilacap refinery in Central Java.
