Two California biomass plants fined for emissions violations

After completing a joint investigation, the U.S. EPA and San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District ordered two California biomass power plants to pay civil penalties of $835,000 to resolve alleged Clean Air Act and district rule violations.
Wisconsin biomass power plant gets draft air permits

We Energies has received draft air permits for its 50-megawatt cogeneration plant in Rothschild, Wis. Following the issuance of the draft permits from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is a 30-day public comment period and hearing.

Dominion to repower coal plant with biomass

Dominion Virginia Power is planning to reopen an off-line coal-fired power plant in Altavista, Va., and repower it with biomass.The plant has been in cold reserve storage rather than retired, and could be brought back on-line with just a little work.
The fiscal year 2012 budget was released by President Obama today, calling for an end to $4 billion worth of oil, gas and other fossil fuel-based subsidies. He proposes cutting the inefficient oil subsidies that impede clean energy investment.
$9 million awarded to DDCE to build cellulosic ethanol plant

The Iowa Power Fund Board awarded a $9 million grant to DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol LLC to build a commercial-scale demonstration biorefinery facility to produce cellulosic ethanol and create jobs in the Iowa counties of Story or Webster.
Study examines impact of crop residue harvest on soil

Crop residues such as corn stover and wheat straw have potential as cellulosic ethanol feedstocks, but they also play a crucial role in maintaining soil quality in the fields in which those crops are grown.
A U.S. District judge ruled that Danisco A/S didn't prove that a Novozymes patent is invalid, meaning the case will go to trial in October. Novozymes filed the patent-infringement lawsuit against Danisco in May regarding an alpha-amylase enzyme.
Democrats are working to direct attention to billions of dollars in tax breaks to oil and gas companies and on Feb. 10, the “Ending Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act,� which seeks to cut oil subsidies, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

WASDE projections lower corn ending stocks 70 million bushels

Increases in corn use for ethanol led the Feb. 9 USDA WASDE report. U.S. corn ending stocks for 2010-'11 are projected 70 million bushels lower for the lowest carryout-to-use ratio since the 1995-'96 marketing year.
In her testimony before a House energy and power subcommittee, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said a bill to stop EPA's enforcement of greenhouse gas regulations would prohibit the EPA from taking further actions to implement the RFS.
