EPA data shows clean fuels industry’s record growth

The U.S. EPA’s 2023 RFS data shows that U.S. production of biomass-based diesel – including biodiesel, renewable diesel, SAF, and heating oil – reached 4 billion gallons in 2023, according to Clean Fuels Alliance America.
U.S. operable biofuels production capacity expanded in October, with gains for both renewable diesel and biodiesel, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Dec. 29. Feedstock consumption was also up.
EverGen Infrastructure Corp. announces the successful completion of the Fraser Valley Biogas expansion and the delivery of first gas injection. The facility is now expected to produce 160,000 gigajoules of RNG annually.
More than 1.99 billion RINs were generated under the RFS in November, up from 1.95 billion generated during the same period of last year. Total RIN generation for the first 11 months of 2023 reached 21.55 billion.
CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange on Dec. 14 released a report focused on forces that will shape the U.S. rural economy next year. The report predicts that both ethanol producers and soybean crushers will benefit from rising demand for biofuels in 2024.

2024 North American SAF Conference & Expo now accepting abstracts

SAF Magazine in collaboration with CAAFI, has announced the 2024 North American SAF Conference & Expo will take place Sept. 11-13, 2024, in St. Paul, Minnesota. The event is accepting abstract submissions through May 10.
Green Impact Partners Inc. has received approval from the Alberta government for construction and operation of the Future Energy Park, a biorefinery that will produce RNG, low-carbon ethanol and wet distillers grains.
Walker Industries announced that its Niagara RNG facility has reached final stages of commissioning, making it the largest RNG project in Ontario. The project is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 48,000 metric tons annually.
Swedish fuel company Preem on Nov. 27 announced it will invest SEK 5.5 billion ($532.82 million) to convert its refinery in Lysekil, Sweden, to produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Aemetis reports progress with biofuel, biogas projects

Aemetis expects to secure the authority to construct air permit for its proposed SAF/RD project in early 2024, according statements made during a Q3 earnings call. Company officials also discussed ongoing biogas, ethanol, biodiesel and CCS projects.
SATORP, platform jointly owned by Aramco (62.5 percent) and TotalEnergies (37.5 percent), has for the first time in the MENA region successfully converted used cooking oil through coprocessing into ISCC+ certified SAF.
CVR Energy Inc. processed a record volume of renewable feedstock at its Wynnewood refinery during Q4. The facility’s feedstock pretreatment unit is nearing mechanical completion and CVR is continuing to evaluate the possibility of producing SAF.
