The U.S. Department of Energy has announced its intent to issue funding to support research and development (R&D) projects for converting algae and other wet waste feedstocks to low-carbon fuels, chemicals and agricultural products.
The U.S. DOE announced at the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Expo in Nashville, Tennessee, up to $2 million in Phase 1 funding for six projects to accelerate wood heater innovation and develop the next generation of efficient and clean wood heaters.
More than 1.89 billion renewable identification numbers (RINs) were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in January, up from 1.76 billion generated during the same month of 2023, according to a data released by the U.S. EPA on Feb. 15.
The U.S. EPA has published updated SRE data, reporting that 35 SRE petitions are now pending, up from 15 that were pending as of mid-January. No new SRE petitions were filed, but 20 previously denied petitions are being reconsidered by the agency.

EPA data shows clean fuels industry’s record growth

The U.S. EPA’s 2023 RFS data shows that U.S. production of biomass-based diesel – including biodiesel, renewable diesel, SAF, and heating oil – reached 4 billion gallons in 2023, according to Clean Fuels Alliance America.
The U.K. government is considering extending subsidies for biomass power producers that plan to develop bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) capacity. A public consultation is open through Feb. 29.
The U.S. EPA published updated renewable identification number (RIN) data on Jan. 18, reporting that nearly 23.75 billion RINs were generated under the Renewable Fuel Standard in 2023, up from 21.35 billion RINs generated in 2022.
The U.S. EPA on Jan. 18 released updated small refinery exemption (SRE) data, reporting that eight new SRE petitions have been filed under the Renewable Fuel Standard in the past month. A total of 15 SRE petitions are now pending.
